What is the Westminster School Society?Founded as a registered charity in 1937 by Lord Greene, Master of the Rolls, the Westminster School Society was created to receive and administer gifts, investments and property bequeathed by OWW. |
What does the School Society do?The Society is administered by a council of Old Westminsters and provides financial assistance to Westminster School for the benefit of current pupils. During the war years when finances were difficult the Society played a vital role when the School was evacuated from London. The Society continues this good work today, each year giving £70,000 to support bursary places at the School. In addition to this the Council annually considers requests for grants from Heads of Departments for desired items that are beyond the department’s budget. Such grants cover myriad items from teaching aids to sports equipment, and funding for specific projects. Items the Society has helped fund in recent years include an electronic scoreboard for Vincent Square, a piano for Milne's Common Room, an electron microscope, a gas chromatograph and funding to enable students to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2002 the Society also donated £100,000 to the School’s capital campaign. |
