From the Archives - Lent 2014

Works by and about Old Westminsters
Three publications have recently been issued following research in the school’s archival collections. Edmund Gray (WW, 1952-56) and Edmund Wareham (WW, 2002-07)  joined forces to produce a thorough and beautifully illustrated history of fencing at Westminster School, in celebration of Tomek Walicki's 25th anniversary as coach. OWW keen to obtain a copy can do so by contacting Edmund Gray on edmund.gray@btinternet.com.

Author/historian Joel Zemel has produced a work entitled Scapegoat in which he exonerates OW Evan Wyatt (QS, 1890-94 - pictured right) from responsibility for the Halifax Explosion of 1917. The disaster resulted from a French cargo ship loaded with explosives colliding with a Norwegian vessel; the ensuing blast killed approximately 2,000 people and wounded many more. Wyatt, who was serving as Acting Commander with responsibility for the port, was held responsible along with the captain and pilot of the Mont Blanc. He was acquitted by trial in 1918, but his reputation and career never recovered.

Reel History
Back in November 2011 the Archives held a film screening of 8 short films made by pupils whilst at the School. The event was well attended and there was a wonderful response from OWW who had been involved in film-making whilst at the School.  It has long been intended to hold another screening and we have finally booked a suitable date in the school calendar: 11th September 2014 – so save the date!  Information about ticketing will be distributed in the next e:liz@ and in the Elizabethan Newsletter. The programme for the evening is not yet fixed, but we intend to screen again some of the hits from the last event alongside new material from the School Archive and Old Westminsters. If you have some old cinefilm or VHS material from your time at the school which you think should be included please do get in touch: email archives@westminster.org.uk or telephone 0207 963 1110.
