OW Sports Clubs

All OWW are encouraged to join any of the clubs listed below and this page aims to give an idea of the activities on offer and what’s involved (practice times, fixtures etc.). Recent news from the various clubs may be found in the annual reports published in the Elizabethan Newsletter (please click here to view PDF copies of previous issues). OW men and women are encouraged to be involved in all OW sport although for some sports currently only single sex teams exist - if you would like to start a new OW sports club please email alumni@westminster.org.uk for details of the process.

Angling

OW Angling meets on an ad hoc basis to fish at various locations as and when opportunities arise. Any OWW with an interest in angling are encouraged to come along.

A visit to a trout lake is planned in September 2016 along with a Grayling Day on the River Test October/November 2016 - please contact Chris Manderson (details below) for further information.

Athletics

The Athletics Club was founded in 1963 when OWW were invited by the School to take part in the annual Towpath Race. OW Athletics do not organise regular training sessions so OWW are encouraged to join their local and university clubs and to compete with the OWW for annual set fixtures. This has settled recently into two main events: the Towpath Cup, a handicap race against the School and Common Room every September, and an Inter Old Boys’ cross-country event in December, in which OWW have done particularly well in recent years.

The OWGS Summer 2017 Meeting was held at Seaford Golf Club 29th/30th July and, despite pouring rain on Saturday afternoon and high winds on Sunday morning, 16 OWW had a very enjoyable time. The party ranged from the young to the elderly with four members in their mid-twenties and five over the age of 75.

On Tuesday, 6th June 2017 the OWGS played in the Senior Bernard Darwin, three pairs of scratch foursomes for players over 65 years. Unfortunately we lost 1-2 to the Wellingtonians. Our results were:

Geoffrey Pope & David Roy lost.
David Coaten & Douglas Frost won.
John McAnally & Simon Mortimore lost.

On 21st January 2017 the 'Ant Hornsby and Tudor Davies 2 Ball Better Ball Stableford Competition' was played  for the first time at New Zealand Golf Club and the winners were Alan Jackson and John McAnally with 46 pts, Edward Cartwright and David Roy were second with 45 pts.

Everybody was very pleased that Jane Davies with her sons James and Alex came to present the prizes.

Real Tennis

Real Tennis, or 'Tennis' (the other game being “Lawn Tennis”), is the only sport played by Old Westminsters that pre-dates the re-founding of the School by Elizabeth I.  Old Westminster Real Tennis encourages involvement from OWW of all ages and handicaps who are interested in representing the Elizabethans, reviving or beginning their involvement in Real Tennis.

Members tend to play at their own clubs and come together for fixtures - there are no regular team practises. We have matches against clubs such as Oxford, Petworth and others and participate in the Brigands Peripatetic Tournament.

Water

The Elizabethan Boat Club, the rowing club for Old Westminsters, encourages involvement from new members of all ages and skill levels who are interested in keeping up or reviving their involvement in Water. The Club would be particularly happy to hear from anyone who can offer coxing and/or coaching experience.  The Elizabethan Boat Club offers a balanced and flexible training programme designed to accommodate busy professionals. Outings are on weekends (usually Sunday mornings) in boats ranging from singles and pairs up to the use of our own VIII, while land training is run on weekdays in members’ own time, with a contingent training together at the Royal Courts of Justice's gym. We race competitively, usually on and around Tideway. Key dates in the calendar to date have been the Head of the River Race in the spring, and Henley Royal Regatta in the summer.
